Leadership
Finishing the Unfinished Task through... Leadership
Our form of government is presbyterian, or representative. Locally,
we are governed by a body of elders called the Session. The Session
gives overall leadership to the congregation, oversees the ministries
of First Reformed, and provides pastoral care for the members. A
body of Deacons, also elected by the congregation, is an arm of
the Session which focuses on mercy ministry, fellowship, care of
our property and stewardship. First Reformed is connected to other
congregations locally through the Pittsburgh Presbytery and nationally
through the General Assembly of our denomination. We are a member
congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America.
The Presbyterian Church in American (PCA) was formed in 1973. The
PCA believes that the Bible is the Word of God and the only infallible
rule for faith and life. We also believe that the system of doctrine
expressed in the historic Westminster Standards is the best expression
of what the Bible teaches. The PCA is very active in planting churches
in the United States, Canada and around the world. In addition to
being one of the fastest growing denominations in the United States,
the PCA has the largest foreign missionary force of any Presbyterian
denomination in the Western World.
Under Shepherd Groups
For the sake of more effective care and greater accountability,
the congregation is divided into a number of smaller Under Shepherd
Groups to enable each of the elders to provide leadership and care
of every member of the congregation. The elders regularly pray for
these groups in their weekly meetings before worship as well as
their monthly meetings of the Session
